Blackwell Regional Library Reopens!

After a 16 month closure for systems and roof upgrades, Blackwell Regional Library reopened on May 20th to an enthusiastic reception of 1700 library fans, including Councilwoman Blackwell, Mayor Kenney, Representative Roebuck and Library President and Director, Siobhan Reardon! Located at the corner of 52nd and Sansom Streets, Blackwell Regional Library is West Philadelphia’s cornerstone of books and community. The only Free Library location with a Lucky Day Collection of brand new bestsellers with no waiting list, Blackwell Regional Library is actively engaging books lovers, connecting library customers to civic resources, and supporting lifelong learning for the community.

Upcoming community interest programs include the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, September 13th at 6 p.m. and the PWD/PHC Rain Check program on Tuesday, October 10th at 6 p.m. Crafters of all types meet every Wednesday at 6 p.m., and quilters of all levels are invited to join the Kuumba quilters the second Saturday of every month from 1- 3 p.m. Sign up for a small group computer class or one-on-one session in our computer lab! Seniors are invited to attend “Sit and Swipe Café” tablet trainings throughout September and October, as well as Medicare workshops on Tuesday, September 12th at 6 p.m. and Tuesday October 24th from 1 p.m. Busy families can enjoy pajama storytime followed by a playgroup on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Friday morning storytime and playgroup starting at 10:30 a.m. In addition to homework help and literacy activities during the school week, Blackwell will also have homework help on the weekends. Special Note: On Saturdays in the children’s department, families can share stories with incarcerated loved ones via live video conference call through the Stories Alive program, part of the Free Library’s Prison Services initiative.
